A person who thinks about drug charges will likely think of ones like possession or selling the drug. What many people might not realize is that selling drugs can lead to charges that are even more serious than those. A prime example is the case of a Gaithersburg man who was charged in connection with the death of a person that was attributed to drugs.
The man was a supplier for a drug dealer who sold fentanyl and cocaine to the person who died. He pleaded guilty in federal court to charges related to the death of the overdose victim.
As part of a plea deal, the man noted that the didn’t know exactly what was in the drugs he sold. He suspected that it was fentanyl. The man did take the time to try to dilute the powerful opioid with powdered sugar to make them safer.
The man faces 10 to 20 years in prison in connection with the crime. His case included charges for being a felon in possession of a handgun, possession of acetyl fentanyl and cocaine and conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. His sentencing is set for October 20. The other man who was also connected with the case pleaded guilty last year and is also awaiting sentencing.
While this case might seem extreme, anyone who is involved with illegal drug sales should realize that prosecutors in this area are taking a harsh stance against drugs. You should make sure that you explore all the options you have for a defense strategy if you are facing any similar charges.
