A Gaithersburg medical supply salesman is charged with larceny

A 52-year-old Gaithersburg, Maryland, medical supply salesman was arrested and charged with grand larceny on Wednesday, April 25 by Fairfax, Virginia, police.

According to a spokesperson with the Fairfax County Police Department, the man stands accused of having entered operating rooms that he had access to in both Virginia and Maryland. Once inside, they believe that he was stealing $200,000 medical kits from them. Investigators have reason to believe that the man later listed and sold them on eBay.

Investigators were first tipped off that some impropriety may have occurred when a Florida supplier interested in buying the medical kit found one for sale on eBay for $33,000. Before going forward with the purchase, that prospective buyer decided to first run its serial number to see if it had been acquired by illicit means.

When they did, Fairfax County Police say that they found out that it was owned by INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital. In contacting the hospital, the prospective buyer found out that none of their workers had listed the kit. Instead, he found out that it was stolen from their premises.

Police ultimately found that seven of the same kits had been stolen, five from the same INOVA hospital and and two from Maryland ones. Police have since accounted for or recovered all but one of those kits from their buyers. Apparently, none of parties in New Jersey, Washington, Florida or New Jersey who purchased the kits knew that they were stolen and thus, none of them will be charged with any crime.

In addition to having been charged with grand larceny, the man also faces money laundering and larceny with an intent to sell charge in Fairfax County. Police note that it’s likely that he’ll also be facing criminal charges in Maryland as well. The man has since been released on bond. It’s unclear when the next hearing is scheduled for in the matter.

If you’ve been arrested on suspicion of having committed larceny, then you’re facing a significant amount of time in jail if convicted of such a crime. In learning more about the circumstances surrounding your arrest, a Gaithersburg attorney can advise you of potential defense strategies that can be pursued in your case.
